Styles of Champagne Glasses

There are two main styles of Champagne Glasses. These are the flute and the coupe. THe flute is styled with a stem glass and has a tall slim bowl. The drinker usually holds the glass at the stem and can then drink without effecting the temperature of the champagne. Additionally, the flute means that the fizz or carbonation of the champagne is retained and it’s freshness is kept. Primarily, this is due to a small surface area of the drink, created by the narrowing of the flute.

The coupe is more saucer shaped and does not look like a traditional champagne glass. It tends to be used for daiquiris and cocktials as well as some liquers. There is a long standing legend that suggests that the coupe was modelled on the breast of Marie Antoinette, Madame de Pompadour, or another French madame. This is widely accepted as being false due to recordings of the design being made specifically for English Champagne drinkers in the mid-1600’s. This pred-dates the aristocrats by almost a century.
